On a cold winter morning, January 27, 2024, a 57-year-old man named Lijun Su from Toronto, Ontario, was last in contact with his family around 6:30 a.m. He had traveled to Southampton to fish at a familiar spot known as Denny's Dam on the Saugeen River. An avid fisherman, Mr. Su was unfortunately at the river's edge when a sudden surge of water and ice, caused by an ice jam giving way upstream, swept through the area. Eyewitnesses reported that the surge was about four feet high, leaving no time for him to react. While others who were also swept into the frigid water managed to escape and were taken to the hospital, Mr. Su was not seen again. His vehicle was later found abandoned in the vicinity, marking the beginning of a long and desperate search. Immediately following his disappearance, the Saugeen Shores Police Service launched an extensive investigation and search operation. They were joined by the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), including their specialized Underwater Search and Recovery Unit and the Emergency Response Team. For months, authorities conducted thorough searches by air, on the ground, and in the water, but their efforts were met with no success. The community and volunteer organizations also dedicated their time, combing the shorelines of the Saugeen River and Lake Huron in and around Saugeen Shores, hoping to find any sign of Mr. Su. Police appealed to the public, particularly residents along the river, to report anything that might assist in the investigation. Despite these exhaustive efforts, which saw an increased police presence with aviation and drones in the area, no trace of him was found for a long time. The painful uncertainty for Lijun Su's family came to a close nearly two years later. On November 15, 2025, human remains were discovered on the shoreline near a seasonal cottage on the Saugeen First Nation. In coordination with the OPP and the Centre of Forensic Sciences, the remains underwent DNA comparison. On January 13, 2026, the Saugeen Shores Police Service confirmed that the remains were positively identified as those of Lijun Su. The tragic discovery brought a heartbreaking end to the missing person case. The investigation, which began with the hope of finding a man who had simply gone fishing, concluded with the sad confirmation of a life lost to the powerful and unpredictable forces of nature. The overview of the case is that a beloved family man went on a fishing trip and was tragically swept away by a sudden ice surge in the river. Despite immediate and extensive search efforts, he was not found until his remains were discovered almost two years later, bringing a devastating conclusion to his family's search.
