In early August 2025, a 29-year-old Indigenous woman named Marika Drew Sutton, known to her loved ones as "Mika," was last seen in the Richfield neighbourhood of Mill Woods in Edmonton, Alberta. Originally from Yellowknife, N.W.T., Marika was a mother who her sister described as bright, funny, and bubbly. Her family, who lived out of the province, grew concerned after being unable to get in touch with her for several weeks, which was highly uncharacteristic of her as she regularly called her family and daughter. On September 25, 2025, they officially reported her missing to the Edmonton Police Service, setting in motion an investigation into her sudden and troubling disappearance. As the weeks turned into months, the investigation took a somber turn. By the end of October 2025, Edmonton police had gathered enough evidence to believe that Marika was deceased and that her disappearance was the result of criminal activity. The case was subsequently handed over to the EPS Homicide Section on October 22, 2025. The investigation led police across the country to Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, where they arrested 47-year-old John Angus Joseph MacArthur on March 17, 2026. MacArthur, who was in an intimate partner relationship with Marika, was charged with second-degree murder and indignity to a body. Investigators also uncovered a history of domestic violence within the relationship that had not been previously reported to the police, leading them to classify her death as an intimate partner homicide. Regrettably, the case is closed as Marika was located deceased. Police believe her remains may have been left somewhere along Highway 2, between Wetaskiwin and Lacombe, between the dates of August 22 and August 29, 2025. During this period, the accused was reportedly driving a black 2014 Jeep Patriot with Alberta licence plate CFB 2578. Authorities have made public appeals, asking landowners, hunters, and anyone who might have been travelling in that area during that specific timeframe to report anything unusual they might have seen, no matter how small it might seem. The case is a heartbreaking overview of a young mother's life taken too soon, leaving a grieving family and community still searching for answers and the chance to bring her home for a final rest.
