Summary based on 1 source
On the morning of July 23, 1991, a group of eight individuals, including 8-year-old Tanya Oolalak, departed from Igloolik, Nunavut, for a journey to Hall Beach, Nunavut. The party traveled in a 24-foot freighter canoe powered by a 30-horsepower outboard motor. The weather that day was treacherous, with stormy conditions and heavy rain creating a hazardous environment for the small vessel. As they navigated the choppy waters, approximately 15 miles north of their destination, the canoe struck submerged ice. The impact caused the canoe to fill with water and capsize, plunging all eight occupants into the frigid Arctic waters.

The unforgiving conditions made survival a desperate struggle. Of the eight people aboard the canoe, only one, Abraham Oolalak, managed to endure the ordeal. He reportedly clung to a piece of ice for 24 hours before being rescued. Upon his rescue, he was treated for hypothermia and was released from the local nursing station that same day. The seven other individuals, including young Tanya, disappeared into the icy waters and were never seen again. Among the missing were Abraham Oolalak's wife and his three adopted children.

A large-scale search effort was launched, involving 40 people and 14 boats, but the challenging conditions and heavy ice in the area severely hampered their progress. The capsized canoe was eventually located, but there was no sign of the seven missing individuals. After a week of exhaustive searching, officials made the difficult decision to end the search, concluding it was unlikely any of the missing people could have survived in the harsh environment. The case of Tanya Oolalak and the six others who vanished that day is a tragic story of a journey that ended in immense loss for the community. The seven individuals are still officially considered missing, a somber reminder of the perils of travel in the unforgiving Arctic.
