Summary based on 1 source
On August 29, 1979, a journey across the vast and often treacherous waters of Lake Athabaska in northern Saskatchewan marked the beginning of a lasting mystery. On that day, 38-year-old Thomas Lidguerre and his companion, 20-year-old Lawrence Sanger, departed from the remote community of Fond du Lac. Their destination was Uranium City, a trip that required them to navigate their boat across a significant stretch of the lake. However, the two men never arrived at their intended port, and as the hours turned into days, concern for their well-being grew among those who knew they were traveling. Lidguerre, born in May 1941, and Sanger, who had just turned 20 that August, vanished without a trace, leaving behind only unsettling questions and the deep silence of the northern wilderness.

The initial hope of a simple delay or a change of plans was tragically shattered two days after their departure. The boat that Lidguerre and Sanger had been using was discovered swamped in the vicinity of the Narrows and Popular Point on Lake Athabaska. This grim finding immediately prompted a large-scale search operation in the desperate hope of finding the two men alive. For more than a month, teams scoured the lake and its surrounding rugged shoreline, battling the challenging terrain and the unforgiving elements. Despite the extensive and sustained efforts of the searchers, no sign of either Thomas Lidguerre or Lawrence Sanger was ever found. The discovery of the empty, waterlogged boat was the last physical evidence connected to the two men, offering no clues as to their ultimate fate.

Decades have passed since Thomas Lidguerre and Lawrence Sanger were last seen, yet their disappearance remains an active and unresolved case. The F Division RCMP Historical Case Unit continues to list both men as missing. Descriptions of the men have been circulated in the hope that someone might come forward with information. Thomas Lidguerre was described as an Aboriginal man, standing approximately 5'8" tall and weighing around 180 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. Lawrence Sanger was also of First Nations descent, taller at about 6'2", with a thin build, long black hair, brown eyes, and a distinctive scar on the top of his right hand. The absence of any further evidence or new leads has left the families of both men without answers, their disappearances a somber narrative of a journey that began with a destination in mind but ended in an enduring mystery on the vast expanse of Lake Athabaska.
