Crystal, described as a white female with blue eyes and dark brown hair, had traveled to Toronto from her home in Edmonton with a significant amount of cash. She was on a mission to secure the release of her boyfriend, Stacey Harris, who had been incarcerated on a drug charge. Carrying $3,000 in a homemade money belt, she intended to use it towards his $15,000 bail.
Upon arriving in Toronto, Crystal's efforts to raise the remaining bail money through legitimate channels proved unsuccessful. At the suggestion of her boyfriend, she sought financial assistance from a loan shark named Ian Rosenberg. An arrangement was seemingly made, with Rosenberg promising to provide the money within a week. However, the deal fell through for unknown reasons.
Crystal confided in a friend that she planned to fly back to Edmonton to continue her fundraising efforts.
