In the quiet landscape of Seminole, Oklahoma, a 41-year-old woman named Cara Marie Cox vanished, leaving behind a life and a family searching for answers. A member of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation, Cara was last seen on the evening of May 15, 2022. At the time of her disappearance, she was driving a green 2000 Honda Civic Del Sol. Her last known contact with anyone was at approximately 8:44 p.m. that day. Concerns for her well-being grew when she ceased all communication, a silence that was out of character for the woman known for her kindness and strong family ties. The mystery deepened when her car was found abandoned five days later, on May 20, at a Love's Travel Stop just off Interstate 40 at the Seminole exit, and was subsequently towed. The investigation into Cara's disappearance uncovered unsettling and contradictory information. It's believed she may have been traveling with a long-haul truck driver. This individual reportedly told Cara's family that he had left her at a rest stop, but his account of the location was inconsistent, at one point citing Arizona and another time California. This shifting narrative raised significant concerns among her loved ones. Adding to the confusion, a possible but unconfirmed sighting of Cara was reported on June 3, 2022. A person claimed to have seen a woman resembling Cara walking on the back roads of Joseph City, Arizona, near the Westover Bridge. Despite these leads, her whereabouts remained unknown, and she was believed to be on foot and possibly trying to hitchhike. Cara is described as a Native American woman with brown hair and brown eyes, standing between 5 feet 3 inches and 5 feet 5 inches tall, and weighing between 120 and 160 pounds. She has several distinct physical features, including pierced earlobes and possibly a piercing at the top of her ears. She has a noticeable bright purple, raised, circular birthmark on her left shoulder blade. Her tattoos are also a key part of her description: a green Care Bear on her right upper arm and a scorpion on the back of her neck with the word "Cara" incorporated into its tail. The Seminole County Sheriff's Office and the Federal Bureau of Investigation are handling the case, but the circumstances surrounding Cara Cox's disappearance remain unclear. The case is a painful example of the disproportionately high rates at which Indigenous women go missing, often leaving their communities to grapple with unanswered questions and the enduring pain of not knowing what happened to their loved one.
