In the autumn of 2021, a 29-year-old woman named Kelsey Rae Long vanished, leaving her family and community with a painful void of unanswered questions. The last confirmed sighting of Kelsey was in the early morning hours of October 27, 2021. She was believed to be traveling north on Interstate 81, making her way from Abingdon, Virginia, with the destination of the Roanoke or Salem area. Reports indicate that her journey placed her in the vicinity of Dublin, Virginia, near exit 98 of I-81, at approximately 3 a.m. From that point on, all communication and sightings of Kelsey ceased, and a profound and troubling silence began. Kelsey is described as a woman with dark features, including dark brown hair that is generally longer than shoulder-length and dark brown eyes. She has a linear scar on her lower abdomen and at least two known tattoos: the words "love always" on her middle finger and "Kj" on her ring finger. There were also unconfirmed reports of a small heart tattoo under one of her eyes. Her ears are pierced, and she may have had a nose hoop at the time of her disappearance. Typically, Kelsey favored comfortable clothing like sweatpants and athletic wear and would likely have been carrying a backpack. She had strong connections to several communities, including Wise County and the Roanoke/Salem area in Virginia, as well as Kingsport, Tennessee. The investigation into Kelsey's disappearance has been ongoing, led by the Virginia State Police in conjunction with the Wise County Sheriff's Office. Despite being listed in national missing persons databases, there have been very few public details released regarding the circumstances of her case, and no substantial leads have been announced. The lack of information has been deeply felt in her hometown of Big Stone Gap, a small community where such events are uncommon and where Kelsey was known for her involvement in high school sports. The case remains an active and unresolved missing person investigation, a painful and lingering mystery for all who know and love Kelsey Rae Long. Authorities continue to ask for anyone with information about her whereabouts to come forward.
