On a spring day in 2021, a 25-year-old man named Tanner Armstrong McKosky was last seen in Bengal, a small community in Le Flore County, Oklahoma. It was April 19th when Tanner, a male with brown hair and brown eyes, was observed walking along Bengal Road, heading in the direction of the town of Leflore. At the time of his disappearance, he was wearing gray sweatpants and basketball shoes. Tanner was described as being between 5'11" and 6'0" tall and weighing around 160 to 170 pounds. He had several distinct tattoos, including wire, a star, and the initials "T M" on his right arm, a biohazard symbol on his left arm, and dots on his hand. The circumstances surrounding his disappearance were concerning, and the LeFlore County Sheriff's Office requested the assistance of the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI), labeling the case as "suspicious". For over three years, Tanner's whereabouts remained a mystery, leaving his family and community in a state of uncertainty. The investigation continued, with law enforcement agencies following up on any leads that emerged. The case was entered into the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs) on April 30, 2021, a little over a week after he was last seen. Despite these efforts, there were no significant breakthroughs in the case for a long period, and the questions surrounding what happened to Tanner lingered. In September 2024, a significant development occurred when skeletal remains were discovered in a wooded area near Bengal, close to where Tanner had last been seen. The LeFlore County Sheriff's Office and the Latimer County Sheriff's Office called upon the OSBI to aid in the identification of the remains. Just two weeks later, in early October 2024, the remains were positively identified as those of Tanner Armstrong McKosky. The Oklahoma Medical Examiner's office is working to determine the cause and manner of death. While authorities have not officially labeled the death as suspicious, the investigation into the circumstances of his death is ongoing. The overview of this case is that a young man disappeared under what were considered suspicious circumstances, and for years his fate was unknown until his remains were tragically discovered not far from where his journey was last observed.
