Matthias Rubisch, a 51-year-old German national, was last seen in Puerto Rico on September 21, 2020. An avid hiker and photographer, Rubisch was known to frequent the island's natural areas. His vehicle was discovered undamaged near a national park, leading investigators to believe he may have gone hiking and not returned. Concerns for his welfare grew after he failed to show up for work and checks of his apartment yielded no clues as to his whereabouts.
The circumstances surrounding Rubisch's disappearance point to a possible accident involving the rough seas at the time. A tripod, believed to be his, was found on the rocks in an area he was known to visit for photography. It is theorized that he was swept away by a wave while taking pictures. Rubisch is described as being approximately 180cm tall, with a skinny build, a bald head, and a North-European appearance. At the time of his disappearance, he had brown eyes and weighed around 180 pounds.
The investigation into Rubisch's disappearance is being handled by both the Policia de Puerto Rico and Interpol. His case is documented under NamUs case number MP75190. DNA samples, including a profile sent from Germany and DNA from a toothbrush, are on file to aid in his identification.
