In the late summer of 2017, 83-year-old Carol Marlene Ferguson, a resident of Bremerton, Washington, disappeared, leaving her community concerned and searching for answers. An avid and experienced hiker, Carol was known for her independent nature and her frequent excursions into the vast wilderness of the Olympic National Park. The last known contact with Carol was on September 26, 2017, when she spoke with a friend and canceled their plans. In the days that followed, concern grew as neighbors noted her absence and that of her distinctive red 2000 Ford Ranger pickup truck. The search for Carol Ferguson began to take shape when her red Ford Ranger was discovered on the morning of October 11, 2017. The truck, easily identifiable by a unique collection of stickers and magnets on its rear bumper and tailgate, was parked at the Putvin Trailhead off Forest Service Road 2500 in Mason County. This location is a gateway to the beautiful and rugged terrain of the Olympic National Forest, an area Carol was known to frequent. Following the discovery of her vehicle, the Mason County Sheriff's Office initiated a search-and-rescue operation in the area surrounding the Lena Lake and the Putvin Trailhead. Despite the efforts of search teams, no trace of Carol was found. The circumstances surrounding Carol Ferguson's disappearance remain a mystery. While she was a seasoned hiker, there were indications that her disappearance might be related to dementia. Her family described her as someone who generally kept to herself. The official search efforts were extensive, with law enforcement and search and rescue teams scouring the challenging landscape of the Olympic National Forest. The Mason County Sheriff's Office also appealed to the public, asking hunters, hikers, and anyone else in the Lena Lake area to be vigilant and report any potential sightings or information. Despite these efforts, Carol's whereabouts have never been determined, and her case remains an unsolved and poignant missing person investigation.
