On August 21, 2000, 59-year-old Ronald Wayne Jager, an experienced fisherman from Fruitland Township, embarked on a fishing trip on Lake Michigan. He launched his boat from the Whitehall Municipal Boat Launch in Whitehall, Michigan, leaving his car and trailer behind.
