On September 23, 1989, 50-year-old Harry Lee Bellard was last seen in Cordova, Alaska, at the time the M/V Steadfast, a tugboat involved in the Exxon Valdez oil spill cleanup, sank. The vessel capsized and went down in the Gulf of Alaska, northwest of the southern tip of Kayak Island, which is approximately 60 miles southeast of Cordova. The incident, which resulted in the loss of all three crew members, is the officially cited circumstance of Bellard's disappearance.
