On July 2, 1987, 33-year-old Carolyn Ruth Banks was last seen at an apartment complex in Dalton, Georgia. According to several witnesses, Banks was forcibly dragged by a man who then threw her into his pickup truck and drove away from the scene. The man returned to the apartment complex several hours later with blood on him and scratches. He claimed to a witness that Banks had jumped out of his truck and left on foot. The same man reported her missing to the City of Dalton Police on July 4, 1987
