On August 10, 1986, 47-year-old Don Lee Hammond disappeared while traveling in a converted 56-foot landing craft, the "Seagull II," from Kotzebue to Deering, Alaska. Also on board was Rodney Howarth, who is also registered as a missing person. The vessel was reportedly carrying a portable drill rig and pilings but never reached its destination. The Alaska State Troopers opened an investigation into the disappearances the following day, August 11, 1986.
