In the early spring of 2024, a family's life was changed when 23-year-old Israel Alejandro Thomas was reported missing. He was last seen in Houston, Texas, on March 8, 2024. Thomas, who was adopted at the age of two, faced significant life challenges; he was diagnosed with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder and was also legally blind. His mother, Lisa Thomas, noted that he had a history of running away, which added a layer of complexity and urgency to his disappearance. Each time he would leave, she would begin a familiar, heartbreaking search, checking places he might go and contacting law enforcement and other agencies for assistance. The search for Israel Thomas began as it had before, with his mother diligently following any potential leads. However, as days turned into weeks, and then months, with no sign of him, the familiar worry grew into a profound sense of loss. The family's efforts to find him were extensive, but yielded no answers. Unbeknownst to them, Israel's journey had come to a tragic and abrupt end the very night after he went missing. In a devastating turn of events, he was struck by a vehicle while walking along Highway 6 in Houston. The driver of the vehicle, reported to be a young person, remained at the scene of the accident. The heartbreaking resolution to Israel's disappearance did not come for several months. Because his DNA was not on file, he was not immediately identified. He was laid to rest in the Harris County East Gate Cemetery alongside many other unidentified individuals. It was not until September 3, 2024, that his family finally received the news they had been dreading. Through a friend, Lisa Thomas learned of her son's fate, and his identity was officially confirmed by the Harris County Coroner's office. This case is a somber reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by individuals with mental health challenges and the profound grief experienced by the families of the missing. In the wake of this tragedy, Israel's mother founded the 241 Runners Awareness program, an initiative to create a better system to help adoptive parents locate their missing children.
