On the evening of November 6, 2021, 51-year-old Randall Lord drove to a Sonic Drive-In on Northeast Ralph Powell Road in Lee’s Summit, Missouri, to meet a potential buyer for a 9mm Glock pistol he had advertised online. Lord, a Kansas City resident who legally bought and sold firearms and who loved Mustang cars and animals, often met buyers in public places. Around 6:30 p.m. witnesses reported a disturbance and gunfire, then saw a dark-colored sedan flee. First responders found Lord deceased in the parking lot from a fatal gunshot wound.
Lee’s Summit detectives used surveillance footage and digital forensics, and video from a nearby business ultimately identified the getaway vehicle as a blue Toyota. Text messages on Lord’s cell phone that arranged the sale led investigators to a phone number and to suspects. Police executed a search warrant on an SUV registered to the mother of one suspect and recovered the Glock Lord had been selling and an ammunition magazine believed to be his.
In December 2022 three male teenagers, then ages 16 and 17, were charged by the Jackson County Office of the Juvenile Officer with first-degree murder, first-degree robbery, armed criminal action and conspiracy; investigators say digital evidence placed them together near the scene and linked them to another shooting and attempted robbery in Belton. Does anyone have information about Lord, the transaction location, or the people involved that could help clarify what happened that night?
