Kameron Stilwell, 26, was fatally shot on July 15, 2020, at the Thornfield, Missouri home of his ex-girlfriend Kimberly Morris. A medical examiner reported methamphetamine, amphetamine, and THC in his system, and an autopsy found four gunshot wounds as the cause of death. Witnesses at the scene described hearing one shot followed by several more in rapid succession and found Stilwell on the floor with blood on his back, still moving and struggling to breathe.

The investigation focused on Timothy Kyle Sprague, who was dating Morris. Sprague fled the scene with Morris and another woman, Kaylee Isaac, and they were arrested the next day in West Siloam Springs, Oklahoma. Sprague faced multiple felonies, including second-degree murder, kidnapping, armed criminal action, unlawful possession of a firearm, and abandonment of a corpse. At a preliminary hearing, testimony established that Stilwell had been in a nine-year relationship with Morris that ended about a month before the shooting and that he had arrived at her home the day of the incident.

In December 2022 Sprague pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter after the state asserted he lawfully engaged in the defense of another and that Stilwell was unlawfully at the residence and believed to be breaking in while making threats.
