On June 1, 2020, officers in Independence, Missouri, responded to reports of a shooting at a CVS on the 1300 block of 23rd Street. First responders found 40-year-old Juan Hernandez, a Hispanic male, lying in the store’s entryway with multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Detectives focused on digital evidence and recovered text messages arranging a meeting for a $4,000 narcotics transaction. Court records say 23-year-old Edwin A. Sagastume-Sosa admitted he went to buy a kilo and that an altercation led him to draw a weapon and fire at least three rounds before fleeing. Investigators say he ran through woods and creeks, buried the handgun in loose soil, and shaved his head; phone records linked him to the arranged meeting. The Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office charged Sagastume-Sosa with second-degree murder and armed criminal action and sought $300,000 bond.
If anyone was in or near that CVS on June 1, 2020, or has information about the meeting, please share what was seen or heard.
