On February 27, 2020, 15-year-old Malachi DaJuan Jeffries was fatally shot in a residential neighborhood in Hazelwood, Missouri. First responders found the teenager with a gunshot wound and emergency efforts were unable to save him.
Investigators concluded the discharge appeared unintentional. Police arrested 18-year-old Timmy Nguyen; charging documents say Nguyen was handling a 9mm Taurus handgun, loading and unloading it, when the weapon fired and struck Jeffries. Prosecutors charged Nguyen with involuntary manslaughter in the first degree and armed criminal action. He reportedly admitted involvement in the events and led officers to the firearm; his bond was set at $30,000.
What information do readers have about the neighborhood context or events earlier that day that might clarify how the weapon came to be handled around the teenagers?
