On August 13, 2009, 57-year-old Harold Pat Koester was found dead near the driveway of his Campbell Road residence in Griffin, Indiana. The Indiana State Police determined his death was not natural; Koester sustained a fatal gunshot wound and the case was classified as a homicide.

Investigators were unable to develop solid leads linking a suspect or motive to the killing. The investigation grew cold and the file was later treated as a cold case. The Indiana State Police have periodically reviewed the case and continue to keep it open.
