D’Angelo Bratton-Bland was 23 and a student body president at Lincoln University when he was shot and killed on a street in Jefferson City, Missouri, in the winter of 2018. A Chicago native who planned to return home to become a special education teacher, he was with a group of young men reportedly pledging for a fraternity when the group stepped out of a car and gunfire erupted. As they scrambled back into the vehicle, Bratton-Bland was struck by a bullet.

Authorities said he was not the intended target and was not involved in illegal activity that night. His family expressed frustration with law enforcement’s handling of the case and raised the possibility that his being openly gay might have been a factor, amid conflicting information about why he was at that location. Two local men, 19-year-old Michael Bouchee and 29-year-old Deangelo Frazier, were arrested in the neighborhood on drug-related charges, and witnesses reported seeing them brandish firearms shortly before the shooting. Both were later charged in connection with the homicide, including second-degree murder, unlawful use of a weapon, and armed criminal action.

Does anyone have information about that night or about D’Angelo’s life at Lincoln University that might help clarify what happened?
