On the afternoon of August 6, 2018, officers in Grandview, Missouri, found 41-year-old Dennis Maurice Gordon Jr. lying in the street near White Avenue and High Grove Road with a gunshot wound to the chest. A witness was holding Gordon when responders arrived; Gordon was pronounced dead at the scene. The witness said he and Gordon had been walking toward a nearby gas station when a green sedan pulled up, a confrontation occurred, an occupant opened fire, and the car then sped away.
Investigators linked the shooting to an earlier fight at a 7-Eleven on July 29 and reviewed reports and dashcam footage to identify people involved. Surveillance near the scene captured a dark-colored sedan entering the area minutes before the shooting and showed a driver wearing distinctive clothing and shoes. Detectives identified 24-year-old Gregory E. Smith as the driver and 29-year-old Steven Samson as the passenger and alleged shooter. A handgun recovered from a residence where Samson had been staying was ballistically matched to the bullet that killed Gordon, and the gun had been purchased from a pawn shop in March. Prosecutors charged both men with second-degree murder and armed criminal action.
Did anyone in the area see the green sedan or recognize the individuals shown on nearby surveillance before or after the shooting?
