On February 8, 2018, officers in Grandview, Missouri, found 25-year-old Derek W. McClain unresponsive inside a running car. He had suffered a fatal gunshot wound; investigators opened a homicide probe. McClain was identified as a Smithville resident who had been in the Grandview area that day.

Family described McClain as a devoted father and husband who enjoyed the outdoors and working on mechanical projects. He left behind a wife and a young son.
