A routine traffic stop in Clinton, Missouri, in the late hours of a Sunday in August 2017 ended with the fatal shooting of Officer Gary Michael, 37, of the Clinton Police Department. Officer Michael had stopped a 2008 Dodge Nitro for a registration violation. After he exited his patrol car, the SUV’s driver also exited and opened fire with a rifle, striking Michael. Despite being mortally wounded, Michael was reportedly able to return fire before the suspect fled.
The suspect, identified as 39-year-old Ian McCarthy, crashed the SUV a few blocks away and fled on foot, triggering a multi-agency manhunt. He was located and taken into custody walking along a state highway in a rural area near Clinton two days later. Officer Michael was the first officer killed in the line of duty for the Clinton Police Department; his brother described him as having a heart to serve, and more than a thousand people attended his funeral.
If anyone has information about that night or remembers seeing the vehicle involved, please share what you know.
