Javon Reilly was 16 when he was shot and killed while walking home from Van Horn High School in Independence, Missouri, on the afternoon of September 19, 2016. Described by friends and family as a popular, stylish student who played football and basketball and was close to his mother and brothers, Javon was confronted in the driveway of a home on South Home Avenue by 20-year-old Tymon Reed, who was reportedly angry with some of Javon’s friends.

The gun discharged, wounding Javon, and as he tried to limp away Reed fired several more shots that proved fatal. Independence police arrested Tymon Reed; prosecutors charged him with second-degree murder and armed criminal action, and a Jackson County jury found him guilty in January 2018.
