Louis Royse Gumpenberger, 33, of Union, Missouri, was fatally shot inside a residence in O’Fallon on August 16, 2016. Gumpenberger had long-standing physical and cognitive impairments from a 2005 car crash, including a limp and limited mental capacity. On the day of the killing he was approached by a woman in an SUV who claimed to be a Dateline NBC producer and lured him into her vehicle with an offer of money to reenact a 911 call. He was driven to her home on Little Brave Drive and escorted inside.
Shortly after noon the woman, identified as Pamela Hupp, placed a frantic 911 call alleging an intruder had followed her into the house, held a knife to her throat, and forced her to drive to a bank; she said she fired in self-defense. Officers found Gumpenberger in the hallway with five gunshot wounds; $900 in cash and a handwritten note with instructions to kidnap and kill Hupp were in his pocket, a note investigators later determined had been planted. Digital evidence placed Hupp’s phone in Gumpenberger’s neighborhood less than an hour before the shooting, and investigators concluded she arranged the encounter to frame another man.
Hupp was arrested and charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action. She later entered an Alford plea and was found guilty and sentenced to life without parole. Does anyone have additional information about Gumpenberger’s life or movements in the days before August 16, 2016?
