Eleven-year-old Brandie Peltz was found murdered in her family home on South Michigan Road in Argos, Indiana, on December 11, 1986. She had been home sick that day. A neighbor driving by noticed smoke coming from the second story around 3:09 p.m.; after calling the fire department and rescuing the family dog, he re-entered the house and discovered Brandie’s body in a bathtub in the downstairs bathroom.

An autopsy found Brandie had been sexually assaulted and strangled, with bruises on her neck. The upstairs fire was started in a bedroom and is believed to have been set to conceal the murder. In the days before the killing the family reportedly received several harassing phone calls in which the caller only breathed heavily before hanging up.

Marshall County investigators never made an arrest, and the case grew cold. The death drew renewed attention after a 2008 fictionalized true-crime book suggested the passerby who found Brandie might be a suspect, prompting a review by the Indiana State Police; some have also explored a possible link to the 1984 unsolved killing of Darlene Hulse a few miles away. Does anyone have information about Brandie, the neighborhood then, or those harassing calls?
