On September 5, 1983, 74-year-old Ruby Carr was found dead in her home at 10 East Adams Street in Peru, Indiana. Officials determined her death was caused by blunt force trauma and stabbing. Personal items were missing and a recently cashed Social Security check for fifty-five dollars was reported stolen, a detail investigators treated as a possible motive linked to robbery.
More than 300 people were questioned early in the probe, but no arrests followed and the case went cold. Carr’s family has publicly criticized the initial investigation, saying the scene was not properly secured and that potential evidence may have been lost. A reported boast by someone claiming to have taken the exact amount of money surfaced as a lead but produced no resolution.
The house where she died has been demolished and the homicide remains unsolved. Does anyone in the Peru area remember anything from late summer 1983 that could help bring new leads?
