Stahl Lee Sturgeon, 50, of Doniphan, Missouri, was shot and killed in Poplar Bluff in March 2016 after giving a roadside motorist a ride. The passenger, Joseph Wade Wisdom of Poplar Bluff, became erratic during the trip, and Sturgeon drew a firearm. A struggle over the gun ended with Sturgeon shot in the neck and chest.

After his arrest, Wisdom told authorities he had been using methamphetamine and had not slept, saying he had been given some bad dope and blaming that for his actions. He was charged with second-degree murder, assault, and unlawful use of a weapon in connection with Sturgeon’s death.
