On the night of November 17, 1978, 17-year-old Ruth Ellen Shelton was working the closing shift at the Burger Chef in Speedway, Indiana, with co-workers Jayne Friedt (20), Daniel Davis (16) and Mark Flemmonds (16). Sometime after 11:00 PM all four employees disappeared. A fellow worker who checked the restaurant around midnight found the back door ajar and the safe open; $581 was missing. Purses and jackets were left behind in the building, and the restaurant was cleaned the next morning, destroying potential evidence.
Two days later the four were found murdered in a wooded area in Johnson County about 15 miles from the restaurant. Ruth and Daniel were found together, face down, each shot multiple times in the head and neck. Jayne was found a short distance away, stabbed twice in the heart with the knife blade broken off inside her chest. Mark was found near a creek with blunt force trauma to his face and left to choke on his own blood.
The investigation produced multiple leads over the years: a 1986 confession by Donald Forrester, later recanted; a man who bragged in a bar but passed a polygraph and later died by suicide; a man who allegedly confessed before dying of a heart attack and whose son later said his father had admitted involvement. No arrests have been made. Does anyone have memories, records, or tips about the night of November 17, 1978 that could help this case?
