On August 9, 2014, in Ferguson, Missouri, 18-year-old Michael Brown Jr. was shot and killed after an encounter with white police officer Darren Wilson. Brown, a recent high school graduate, was walking with a friend, Dorian Johnson, in the middle of a street when Officer Wilson approached. An altercation began at Wilson’s vehicle and continued onto the street; accounts of what happened diverge sharply.
Officer Wilson said Brown assaulted him in the police vehicle and tried to take his service weapon, then charged after a short foot pursuit, prompting Wilson to fire in self-defense. Johnson and other witnesses described Wilson as the aggressor, with some early accounts saying Brown had his hands raised when shot. Forensic findings and witness statements later led the Department of Justice to dispute some of the initial claims about raised hands. Brown was unarmed and was shot at least six times, with all bullets entering from the front of his body.
A St. Louis County grand jury declined to indict Darren Wilson after hearing testimony from about 60 witnesses. The U.S. Department of Justice also investigated and concluded the evidence did not support federal civil rights charges, finding no evidence to disprove Wilson’s stated fear for his safety. Did anyone who was in that neighborhood that afternoon see details that haven’t been shared publicly?
