On September 19, 2000, an intruder entered the Topeka home of 80-year-old Mabel Aguirre and her 82-year-old husband, Raymond, by slipping through a bathroom window at 1900 SE Washington. The assailant, described as a young Black male in his late teens to early twenties with a short afro and wearing a red sweater with a white collar, demanded money. When the couple could not produce any, he beat both victims until they were unconscious, then ransacked the house and stole checks and a gold-plated Seiko watch before fleeing out the back door.
Both Mabel and Raymond were found the next day by their son, lying in pools of blood. Raymond died of his injuries on October 14, 2000. Mabel survived but was left blind in one eye and with major mobility problems. The attack is being investigated as a homicide, aggravated burglary, and aggravated battery; no arrests have been announced and the suspect remains at large.
Does anyone have information about the man seen wearing a red sweater or about the stolen gold-plated Seiko watch?
