A badly decomposed young man found in a shallow grave in Sedgwick County on October 29, 1994, has been identified as Harold James Crawford. Employees clearing ditches in the 5600 block of West 47th Street South uncovered the body. An autopsy determined blunt force trauma to the head was the cause of death. He was estimated to be in his early twenties and was wearing a purple striped shirt and khaki shorts when discovered.
Crawford, 21 at the time, had been living in an apartment in east Wichita. His family was reportedly told he had left the state or the country and closed their missing person report. In 2023 DNA and genetic genealogy finally returned a name to the John Doe and reopened the investigation. No arrests have been announced; detectives say they have spoken with several persons of interest and describe the probe as active.
Does anyone who knew Harold or who lived in east Wichita in 1994 have information that could help investigators?
