Michael J. Fowler was 19 when he was found shot to death on the side of the road in the 9000 block of North Oliver Street in Sedgwick County, Kansas. His body was discovered in the early morning hours of September 14, 1988, after a 911 caller reported hearing screams and gunshots around 1:00 a.m. Fowler had been shot multiple times and investigators opened a homicide inquiry that went cold with no arrests.
On the evening of September 13 Fowler had been with a female friend and later met an acquaintance, Eddie Jason Coolinge (also known as Eddie Hale and Jason Hale). Fowler, Coolinge, and another man were seen together at the Circle Cinema adult video store. Fowler’s car was later found parked near his parents’ home with his keys and wallet inside. Detectives identified Coolinge and 19-year-old Daryl Weaver as the main persons of interest; Weaver later told police Coolinge confessed and claimed a man nicknamed Tiny had been paid $10,000 to carry out the killing. Both Coolinge and Weaver have since died.
The sheriff’s office is still seeking information. If anyone knew Coolinge, Weaver, or the men called Terry or Tiny, or has details about that night in Riverside, can you come forward?
