James Derek Baldwin, 49, was one of five men killed in a mass shooting at a residence on Bobo Drive in Inman, South Carolina, on October 9, 2022. The house was known to law enforcement as a location of drug activity; Baldwin had been staying there along with some of the other victims. The other four killed were Adam Daniel Morley, 32; Mark Allen Hewitt, 59; Roman Christean Megael Rocha, 19; and Thomas Ellis Anderson, 37.
Investigators quickly identified 24-year-old James Douglas Drayton, who had also been living at the residence, as a suspect. He was arrested the next day in Burke County, Georgia, after committing an armed robbery and kidnapping and leading police on a chase in a stolen vehicle belonging to one of a victim’s mothers. Authorities say Drayton confessed to the quintuple homicide, told investigators he had used methamphetamines for four days without sleep and was hearing voices, and the suspected murder weapon was recovered from the vehicle he was driving.
Drayton later pleaded guilty in Georgia to the robbery, kidnapping and firearm charges and received a 25-year sentence; South Carolina prosecutors charged him with five counts of murder and announced their intention to seek the death penalty. A trial date in South Carolina had not been set by late 2025.
Did anyone who knew James Derek Baldwin or observed activity at the Bobo Drive residence in the days before October 9, 2022 have information to share?
