On June 25, 1982, the blood-soaked vehicle of 33-year-old Lupe Leo Ornelas was found abandoned near 55th Street South and K-15 in Sedgwick County, Kansas. A search of the area led to his body in a nearby ditch, with the crime scene ultimately placed near 55th Street South and Webb Road.

Coroners and investigators determined Ornelas had been shot three times in his upper left chest and left arm. Authorities have suggested a possible drug-related motive, but no arrests or public suspect identifications have ever been announced.
