On the afternoon of October 5, 2022, gunfire broke out in a North Charleston neighborhood at the corner of Hunters Ridge Lane and Peppertree Lane. Dominique B. Whitehead, 29, was in the yard of a home when he and two others were struck by gunfire around 2:45 p.m. Emergency responders arrived and the two wounded survivors were taken to a hospital; Whitehead’s injuries proved fatal and he was pronounced dead by the Dorchester County Coroner’s Office at 5:00 p.m. An autopsy was scheduled at the Medical University of South Carolina.

The North Charleston Police Department identified two suspects during the investigation. Twenty-three-year-old Avery Aaron Adams was arrested and charged with one count of murder, two counts of attempted murder, and possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a violent crime. Nineteen-year-old J’Von Sh’Mar Rhodes was later apprehended by the U.S. Marshals Task Force working with North Charleston police and faced the same charges.
