Barry Alan Reynolds, 40, and his mother Betty Jane BJ Reynolds, 71, were found shot to death in their Saddle Ridge Road home in Fort Mill, South Carolina, on September 27, 2022. The killings occurred in an affluent neighborhood and investigators said they did not appear to be random.
Within about ten days police arrested 45-year-old Paul Eugene Bumgardner of Gastonia, North Carolina. He was charged with two counts of murder, first-degree burglary and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. Prosecutors said Bumgardner had tracked his estranged wife to the Reynolds residence; testimony at trial included a 911 call from the wife who was on the phone with Barry as he answered a knock and then a scuffle and his scream were heard. The prosecution also presented DNA evidence from a hat and mask and GPS data; the defense argued those items did not prove guilt.
The trial began in April 2024 and the jury returned verdicts of not guilty on all counts. No one else has been charged in the double homicide, leaving the deaths unresolved. Does anyone have information about who might have been at the Saddle Ridge Road home that night or saw suspicious activity in Fort Mill around September 27, 2022?
