Betty Reynolds was 71 when she was found shot to death alongside her 40-year-old son Barry Reynolds in their Saddle Ridge home in Fort Mill, South Carolina. Officers discovered the bodies on September 27, 2022, during a welfare check; both victims had sustained multiple gunshot wounds and Betty’s glasses were found broken beside her. Investigators quickly ruled the deaths homicides.
Police arrested 45-year-old Paul Eugene Bumgardner in Gastonia, North Carolina, on October 6, 2022, and charged him with two counts of murder, first-degree burglary, and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. Prosecutors later alleged Bumgardner followed his estranged wife to the Reynolds’ home, shot her boyfriend Barry, then killed Betty. Trial testimony in April 2024 included the estranged wife’s account of being on the phone with Barry when someone came to the door saying they had a package, and evidence prosecutors presented included DNA from a hat and mask at the scene that matched Bumgardner and deleted search history on his phone.
Does anyone have additional information about the Reynolds family, their neighborhood, or the events leading up to September 27, 2022?
