On the evening of Tuesday, September 27, 2022, 24-year-old Tymel Howard was found shot to death at the Cypress River Apartments on Blue House Road in Ladson, South Carolina. Reports of gunfire drew North Charleston officers to the complex around 9:30 p.m.; as they arrived they saw a vehicle speeding from the scene and discovered Howard’s body inside a car. The Charleston County Coroner’s Office confirmed he died from gunshot wounds. Howard was a resident of Summerville and is described as Black/African American.

Police conducted a protective sweep of Howard’s apartment during the initial investigation and have appealed to the public for information, including anonymous tips through Crime Stoppers; no arrests have been announced and the investigation remains active. In December 2022 Howard’s estate, represented by Lonnie Howard, filed a lawsuit naming Cypress River Apartments and other entities.
