On the evening of August 10, 2022, officers from the Florence Police Department responded to a residence on Maxwell Street in Florence, South Carolina, after reports of a shooting. First responders found a male victim who had sustained fatal gunshot wounds; the Florence County Coroner identified him as 28-year-old Derris Lashawn Brown, a Black man, and confirmed he died at the scene.

The shooting on Maxwell Street became an active homicide investigation. Investigators noted this was the third shooting on that street during the year. At the time of initial reports there were no announced arrests and no suspects publicly identified; detectives were collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses while seeking a motive.
