In the early morning hours of July 10, 2022, 21-year-old Ryan Todd Shull of West Columbia was shot and killed during a domestic-related incident in the New Friarsgate subdivision of Irmo, South Carolina. Police responded about 1:30 a.m. to a home on Shawn Bay Road and found Shull with a gunshot wound to his chest; he died after life-saving measures at the scene.
Investigators report that Shull had broken into the residence and confronted the sleeping homeowner. The homeowner fired a handgun in what law enforcement described as an act of self-defense. No arrests were made, and authorities said there was no ongoing danger. The Irmo Police Department, Richland County Coroner’s Office and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division continued the probe and planned to turn findings over to the Solicitor’s Office; police also noted they were considering the state’s Castle Doctrine in the investigation.
Shull, born January 31, 2001, graduated from Airport High School in 2019, worked as a journeyman electrician for Spratlin Electric Contracting, bowled with the Greater Columbia Youth Bowling League and attended Green Hill Baptist Church. Did anyone in the area know Ryan or have information about the events that night?
