Javarious Marticus Scott, a 21-year-old Black man from Marion, South Carolina, was fatally shot on June 6, 2022, at an apartment complex off Bluff Road in Horry County. Local law enforcement opened an immediate investigation into the shooting.

The investigation led to the arrest of 22-year-old Derwin Dewayne Ellison Jr., taken into custody by the Marion Police Department with assistance from the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division. Ellison faced multiple charges including murder, pointing and presenting a firearm at a person, discharging a firearm within city limits, unlawful carrying of a firearm, and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. He was denied bond on the murder charge pending a Circuit Court Judge’s decision.

A one-year-old child who was present was also seriously injured, sustaining vision damage and requiring hospitalization; no charges related to the child’s injuries had been filed at the time of the arrest and that aspect remained under investigation. A funeral service for Scott was held June 14, 2022, at the CD Joyner Auditorium.
