Charles Jacob ’CJ’ Young, 82, was found dead in the kitchen of his Harleyville, South Carolina, home after a gunshot wound to the neck. Young had allowed Nathan Wesley Zeigler, 64, to live in the Dorchester County house rent-free for about twenty years while Young ran a furniture upholstery business in New York and later returned to the Johnson Road and Honeysuckle Road property. The men’s relationship became strained after Young’s return and produced domestic disputes that required police responses; an eviction notice had been served to Zeigler before the fatal incident.
Deputies took Zeigler into custody at the scene. He later acknowledged shooting Young and said he acted in self-defense. Investigators recovered the firearm used in the killing hidden inside a grill. A jury reached a guilty verdict after nearly four hours of deliberation, and Zeigler was sentenced to life in prison without parole and convicted of possession of a firearm during a crime for the death of his longtime friend and benefactor.
Did anyone in Harleyville know the two men well enough to shed light on how their long friendship deteriorated into violence?
