A dispute between two men on Old Spartanburg Highway, just north of Woodruff, South Carolina, left 43-year-old Jason Barrett Hammett shot in the head on June 8, 2021. He was taken to Spartanburg Medical Center and on June 10, 2021 the Spartanburg County Coroner’s Office pronounced him brain dead. Hammett was remembered for his love of motorcycles and cars and his work in the construction industry.

Deputies from the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office found Hammett at the scene with two women who said the suspect had fired at them as they tried to flee, causing their vehicle to crash into a tree; the women were not struck. Investigators identified 31-year-old Cody Flynn Kennerly of Woodruff as the suspected shooter. Kennerly was arrested the same day and charged with three counts of attempted murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime; he was out on bond at the time on earlier weapons-related charges.

The investigation was later classified as a homicide. If anyone has information about what happened on Old Spartanburg Highway that night, please share what is known with the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office.
