Bryant Anthony Bowman, 35, was fatally shot multiple times in the early morning hours of June 6, 2021, near a nightclub in the Paxville area of Clarendon County. He died while being transported to McLeod Health Clarendon, and authorities ruled his death a homicide.

Three people were arrested on June 9, 2021. Joi Janae Hill, then 38, and her 22-year-old son, Jaquez Daquel Hill, were charged with murder; 33-year-old Shanaya Jonnale Larkins was charged with accessory after the fact. At a July 2021 preliminary hearing, testimony described an altercation between Joi Hill and Bowman, after which Joi Hill allegedly called her son to bring a gun. Witnesses said Jaquez Hill arrived with a firearm and shots were fired. An early warrant reportedly named Joi Hill as the shooter but was later amended to identify Jaquez Hill as the gunman. Joi Hill received a $75,000 surety bond with GPS monitoring; Jaquez Hill was denied bond.
