On the evening of May 21, 2021, 32-year-old Durance McCray of Longs, South Carolina, was shot to death in the parking lot of Captain Archie’s, a restaurant in North Myrtle Beach. After spending time inside, McCray walked out and was met in the lot by an employee, dishwasher Driscoll Riggins Jr., who opened fire, striking McCray eight times in the head and upper body. A witness saw multiple shots fired into McCray’s BMW. McCray was taken to a nearby hospital and later pronounced dead.

North Myrtle Beach police identified Riggins as the primary suspect, and he was arrested and charged in the killing. At a May 2023 trial the prosecution described Riggins waiting for McCray to exit the restaurant before shooting; the defense said Riggins acted in fear for his life. The jury acquitted on murder but convicted Riggins of manslaughter and felony weapons possession, and a judge sentenced him to 25 years.

In March 2024 McCray’s estate filed a civil suit against the owners and the manager of Captain Archie’s, alleging negligent hiring, inadequate supervision and failure to provide security after reporting prior violent behavior by Riggins. If anyone knew McCray, his movements that night, or has information about security or staffing at the restaurant, please come forward.
