Leo Junior Brockington, 47, of Florence, South Carolina, was shot on the morning of Tuesday, March 9, 2021, in the 700 block of Roosevelt Street. Florence police found him with life-threatening injuries around 8:15 a.m.; he was taken to McLeod Hospital and later died. The Florence County Coroner confirmed his identity and an autopsy was scheduled at the Medical University of South Carolina.

Investigators concluded the shooting arose from a drug transaction that escalated into an armed robbery. Two brothers were arrested within about a day: 66-year-old Freddie Junior Wells, a former law enforcement officer, was arrested the evening of March 9; his 52-year-old brother Johnny Wells was taken into custody the following evening at a VA hospital in Charleston. Both were charged in connection with Brockington’s death; charges included murder, armed robbery and criminal conspiracy, and Johnny Wells faced an additional weapon charge. As of March 2021, both were being held at the Florence County Detention Center pending bond hearings.
