Jairus Mickale Byrd, 35, was fatally shot on January 22, 2021, on Spring Street in Laurens, South Carolina. According to accounts, the attack was targeted: several men went to the apartment where Byrd was staying, cornered and assaulted him in a bedroom, and he managed to escape. When he returned shortly afterward to retrieve belongings, he was met with gunfire. One man who remained inside opened fire as Byrd approached, and others outside also shot at him as he tried to flee. Byrd was struck by multiple bullets, collapsed in the street, and later died at the hospital.

Investigators linked the killing to events more than a decade earlier, when Byrd had served as a confidential informant for the Laurens Police Department; that past cooperation is reported to have motivated the attack. Social media posts by one of the suspects were cited as evidence tying him to the motive and to others involved.
