Darius Michael Hemingway, 30, was killed in a shooting at Allen’s Food Basket off U.S. 501 in the Racepath area of Myrtle Beach on the morning of October 12, 2020. A burst of gunfire left Hemingway and another man, Antonio Woods, dead; several others were wounded. The Horry County coroner says Hemingway died at the scene.

The investigation produced multiple arrests. Samuel Alexander Frye, 21, an active-duty airman, and Mardave Hunter were charged with two counts of murder, five counts of attempted murder, and one count of first-degree assault and battery. Tyrese Lighty was implicated and later pleaded guilty to two counts of voluntary manslaughter; he received a 15-year sentence in January 2023. Lonnell Ducket Jr. faced eight counts of accessory after the fact to felony murder. In December 2022 a jury found Frye and Hunter not guilty of the murder charges.

Hemingway was remembered in the community for mentoring youth, helping the Myrtle Beach Seahawks win a 2008 state basketball championship, and running an annual toy drive. Can anyone who knew Darius or who was at Allen’s Food Basket that morning share information that could add to the record?
